The throngs of ladies which pass up and down West Fourteenth-street every pleasant afternoon find no pleasanter place in which to pause and pass a few moments than the establishment of James A. Hearn & Son, at No. 30 of that thoroughfare. The store yesterday was crowded with ladies, who found delight in examining the rich stock of goods displayed, and few who entered departed without being tempted to purchase some article. The stock on exhibition is of the very best material, made up in the latest and most fashionable styles, and offered at remarkably low prices, where the quality is taken into consideration. A main feature of the trade of Hearn & Son is the upholstery department, which is in the basement and occupies the en-tire length of one side of the store from Fourteenth to Thirteenth street. This department is comparatively a new feature, having been established only last year, but the trade has grown so rapidly that the firm now manufactures its curtain poles, cretonnes, raw silk tapestries, Turcoman curtains, and raw silk and chenille curtains. The department is one of the largest, if not the largest, in the city, and the display of fine goods is very extensive. The novelties specially in demand this season are bordered curtains in lace and dados in raw silk and chenille. In curtain poles those of hammered brass are mostly in demand. Two of the principal novelties in the upholstery line are furniture crepes and Ottoman cretonnes in printed fabrics. Among the tapestries largely called for are the Kensington, which possesses the property of allowing the light to shine freely through it, producing a beautiful effect, and the Gobelin, in both of which the department is well stocked and the goods are sold at remarkably low prices.


Linens and linings, blankets and portieres are also displayed in various designs in the basement, which was so thronged with customers yesterday that it was difficult to push one`s way through the crowded rooms. The art embroidery department, although a comparatively new feature, has grown very rapidly. Here a large display of beautifully hand-embroided lambrequins, table scarfs, in plush and felt, and other articles is made. The embroidery is in gold, silver, plush, and different colored flowers, and the effect is decidedly pretty. Hearn & Son also exhibit a full line of silks of all kinds. The novelty this sea on appears to be Persian patterns in damassé, but the demand is also great for two-toned brocaded velvets and silks and satin merveilleux. Wraps in beaded plush trimmed with feathers, fringe, and fur; wraps of brocaded velvet trimmed with Alaskan sable, and plush and sealskin sacques are displayed in a large variety of styles, and the stock of dress goods is complete in every department. Bouclé is the favorite dress goods now, but pluids are fairly in demand. Real laces are the rage this season, and hand-run Spanish, of which a fine exhibition is made, is the favorite. In furs the lynx is first in demand, and the gray fox next. Trimmings of all kinds, gloves, ribbons, hose, handkerchiefs, and nearly everything that a lady wants can be had in the establishment of Hearn & Son at prices to suit any reasonable person.
