Royal FurnitureROYAL FURNITURE AT AUCTION. Paris Dispatch to the London Daily Telegraph. For the first time in the annals of the great Paris salesroom called Hôtel Drouot the furniture of a member of a royal family was disposed of by auction there yesterday. The articles offered for sale were of a magnificent description, comprising chairs, tables, divans, and various ornaments for drawing rooms, all of which bore the Fleur de Lis of the house of France and the collar of the Golden Fleece. The articles had belonged to a member of the Bourbon family. The prices realized were mournful in their meagreness. The salon furniture only brought £41, and a splendid porcelain vase, ornamented with the royal arms and surmounted by a crown, was knocked down at the ridiculously low figure of 21f. The whole sale was a most melancholy commentary on the fate which has overtaken many of the representatives of royal or noble houses in this country of iconoclastic democracy and uncompromising republicanism. |
