War Governor in Danger as Place Is Destroyed with Loss Exceeding $1,000,000. PRICELESS RELICS LOST House, Remnant of William Sprague's Vast Fortune, Was Identified with Stirring Events in Nation's Annals.

NARRAGANSETT PIER, R.I., Oct. 11. -- Canonchet, the historic mansion of War Governor William Sprague, near here, was destroyed by fire early to-day. The loss is placed by Mrs. Sprague at $650,000. Ex-Gov. Sprague, who is 79 years old and feeble, was taken from his bedroom and carried out of the burning house by Michael Allen, the coachman.
